Richard Brislin is a professor of . Brislin is a distinguished scholar and a world-class teacher. He primary work is in the area of inter-cultural training and cross-cultural psychology and communication. Teaching about culture is difficult when students do not have concrete experiences to anchor theoretical ideas. Brislin bridges this gap by exploring critical incidents that capture cultural misunderstanding in the workplace and social settings.

He also organizes voluntary graduate seminars for those wishing to enhance their cultural awareness. Brislin writes a Honolulu Star-Bulletin column "Enjoying Your Work," which provides the business community with information about dealing with communication misunderstandings.

The Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Teaching is awarded by the Board of Regents as tribute to faculty members who exhibit an extraordinary level of subject mastery and scholarship, teaching effectiveness and creativity and personal values that benefit students.
