Wayne T. Nishijima

Associate dean and associate director for cooperative extension of the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, Wayne T. Nishijima has served at the university for 27 years. He is a noted authority on tropical plant diseases.
Nishijima been a contributing author on the most authoritative reference on tropical fruit diseases published by the American Phytopathological Society. He is world renowned for his research on papaya diseases and for solving the serious bacterial blight of anthurium.
Although based at Manoa, Nishijima is often at CTAHR’s Hilo facility on weekends and holidays researching information requested by local growers or doing maintenance on the facility. A former lieutenant colonel, Nishijima is active in the Hawaii Army National Guard Retiree’s Association and volunteers for the Hospice of Hilo and the Waiakea Lions.
One colleague notes, "Dr. Nishijima has worked tirelessly to strengthen CTAHR’s image and increase its productivity and relevance to Hawaii’s people."
