Brandon Ledward

Brandon Ledward is a doctoral candidate in the and this year’s recipient of the Graduate Teaching Assistant Award. Ledward believes that the hallmark of a quality education is the ability to combine different streams of knowledge in imaginative ways. His teaching philosophy springs from his experience as an instructor, as well as from his cultural roots and personal journeys.
Ledward sees his role as an instructor to be twofold—he must motivate his students to develop original ideas and then provide them with the necessary resources and skills to discover new possibilities for themselves. He firmly believes that anthropology is an essential component of any liberal arts education because it opens one’s eyes to framing the world in new and exciting ways.
Ledward bases his relationships on mutual respect and fairness. From a cultural perspective, teaching is a position of privilege that carries with it a weighty responsibility that he knowingly accepts. A faculty member wrote, "In many ways, working with Ledward was more like collaborating with a knowledgeable and enthusiastic junior colleague than with a student."
The Frances Davis Award for Undergraduate Teaching recognizes dedication and demonstrated excellence as teachers of undergraduate students. It was established as a memorial to the late Frances Davis, who taught mathematics at Leeward Community College and 麻豆传媒Manoa for 19 years.
