Rise Up! presents dance as a potent expression of social consciousness and features choreography by seminal dance figures Pearl Primus, Donald McKayle, Anna Sokolow, and more.
Lewis Allanās poem about lynchings, āStrange Fruit,ā also recorded as a single by Billie Holiday, will be embodied in Primusā powerful choreography.
McKayleās majestic āIāve Known Riversā and Sokolowās riveting āSteps of Silenceā will also take the stage.
Audience input will influence a work choreographed by Ā鶹“«Ć½Manoa dance faculty entitled āVote.ā
The age of Aquarius dawns in part two, with selections from the 1968 Broadway hit, Hair, accompanied by a live rock band with choreography and musical direction by Honoluluās own Andrew Sakaguchi.
