Annual Dance Concert

Directed by Betsy Fisher

Rise Up! presents dance as a potent expression of social consciousness and features choreography by seminal dance figures Pearl Primus, Donald McKayle, Anna Sokolow, and more.

Lewis Allanā€™s poem about lynchings, ā€œStrange Fruit,ā€ also recorded as a single by Billie Holiday, will be embodied in Primusā€™ powerful choreography.

McKayleā€™s majestic ā€œIā€™ve Known Riversā€ and Sokolowā€™s riveting ā€œSteps of Silenceā€ will also take the stage.

Audience input will influence a work choreographed by Ā鶹“«Ć½Manoa dance faculty entitled ā€œVote.ā€

The age of Aquarius dawns in part two, with selections from the 1968 Broadway hit, Hair, accompanied by a live rock band with choreography and musical direction by Honoluluā€™s own Andrew Sakaguchi.

Rise Up! shows in colorful, imaginative action, that dance creates powerful and glorious social statements.
