March 12, 3:00pm - 4:00pmMānoa Campus, Marine Science Building 100
Who is Kanaloa? an oceanographic perspective part I
As part of colonial efforts of conversion, early missionaries in Hawaii translated the concept of akua as god, or deity. This seminar will introduce a new framework for understanding Hawaiian akua with a specific focus on the principle akua Kanaloa, commonly thought of as the god of the ocean. Attendees will participate in re-interpretation and re-translation of the oli (chant) E Kanaloanuiakea (below) through an oceanographic lens. No experience in Hawaiian language is necessary but attendees should bring either a smart phone or laptop.
