Julie Powers

Julie Powers is an assistant professor of early childhood education and currently serves as department chair for social science at the University of Hawaii Maui College.
Originally from Tucson, Arizona, she has worked in the field of early childhood education in Hawaii, Colorado, Minnesota and Arizona and has consulted internationally.
Powers is passionate about supporting children and families by preparing her students to be nurturing, knowledgeable, committed professionals.
One student wrote, “From planning activities to building relationships, I am truly inspired to emulate Julie’s respectful and creative ways when engaging with children.”
A faculty member noted, “Julie Powers lives and breathes student-centered teaching and is an exemplar on our campus of service to undergraduate students.”
She supports her community by serving on the Maui Economic Opportunity Board of Directors and providing workshops for local schools and conferences. “She is a resource that I will turn to for reflection, guidance and support.” She has also taken leadership roles for the National Association for the Education of Young Children, authoring “Parent-Friendly Early Learning.”
The Frances Davis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching recognizes dedication and demonstrated excellence as teachers of undergraduate students. It was established as a memorial to the late Frances Davis, who taught mathematics at Leeward Community College and Â鶹´«Ã½Manoa for 19 years.
