November 29, 12:00pm - 1:30pmMānoa Campus, Moore Hall 258
Sea of Words: Language and Everyday Geographies across Oceania's Seascape(s).This talk by Professor Alexander Mawyer highlights the language-encoding of marine spaces and places In conversation with the critical need to understand how Oceania's Indigenous and local communities are profoundly related within seascapes and marine domains, and noting that culturally-grounded epistemologies, biocultural and other sorts of linkages between communities and seascapes are robustly encoded, maintained, and inhabited within Oceania’s languages, what might one make of the languaging nature of waterworlds? Professor Alexander Mawyer is Director of the Center for Pacific Islands Studies and Acting Chair of the Department of Pacific Islands Studies at the University of Hawai’i at ²ÑÄå²Ô´Ç²¹ (UHM). The EH@Â鶹´«Ã½Fall 2023 Lecture Series is supported by the ²ÑÄå²Ô´Ç²¹ Center for the Humanities and Civic Engagement (M-CHACE).
