Community-Based Participatory Research in Wahi KÅ«puna Stewardship at Kalaeloa Heritage Park, presented by Dr. Kirsten Vacca. Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) necessitates community members to be equal participants in every stage of the archaeological research process. Archaeology in Hawai‘i frequently involves community participation, but projects in which community members are engaged as equal partners throughout each stage of the process remain uncommon. This talk will discuss the importance of a truly CBPR project for the University of Hawai‘i – West O‘ahu (UHWO) archaeology program and the steps the program has taken to develop a CBPR field school at Kalaeloa Heritage park over the last several years. The work that has been completed to date includes surveying, mapping, and recording the cultural heritage at the park. The data collected is the focus of ongoing analysis but the interpretive stages have been met with collaborative hurdles. The collaborative stages of research design and project goals will be reviewed as will the plan to continue to move the project toward a truly participatory model that can serve as an example for future projects at UHWO. Dr. Kirsten Vacca is an Assistant Professor of Historical Archaeology at Â鶹´«Ã½- West O'ahu. Her research is community-oriented and addresses issues of colonialism, sex and gender, sexuality, and social praxis in Hawai‘i. Dr. Vacca completed her Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley in 2019, her M.A. at Northern Illinois University in 2010, and her BA at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa in 2008.
