NDPTC Third Thursday Webinar
July 20, 12:00pm - 1:00pmMānoa Campus, Online
The period following the great 2018 eruption at Kilauea has been anything but tranquil for Big Island residents. The last four years have seen three lava fountaining eruptions from the Halema‘uma‘u crater on the summit of Kilauea and a short-lived but spectacular summit and flank eruption from Mauna Loa in 2022. In the first part of this seminar, Ken Hon describes USGS’s response to these eruptions, describing the successes and articulating some issues that inevitably arise in responding on extremely short notice to an emerging volcanic crisis. Bruce Houghton will introduce a new NSF-funded research initiative called the Community Network for Volcanic Eruption Response (CONVERSE). This partnership between USGS and academic scientists looks to build and diversify this research community while promoting a deeper understanding of the processes on and under our volcanoes.
