Misinformation and the Raid on Parihaka, NZ, 1881

March 21, 6:00pm - 7:00pm
West Oʻahu Campus, Zoom

Speaker: Kealani Cook, PhD, Professor, University of Hawaiʻi - West Oʻahu. In 1881, a large armed force descended on the Māori settlement of Parihaka, arresting Tohu Kākahi and Te Whiti o Rongomai, destroying much of the village, and forcing the majority of its population into exile. The village and its leaders had been the center of a non-violent civil disobedience campaign aimed at securing rights to their own lands regularly promised but delayed by multiple New Zealand (NZ) administrations. This presentation looks at the NZ government and settler newspaper misinformation campaigns portraying Parihaka as a violent nest of fanatics. Dr. Kealani Cook is an Associate Professor in the Humanities Department at the University of Hawaiʻi, West Oʻahu where he teaches Hawaiian and Pacific history. Originally from Waimea, Hawaiʻi, he now lives on Oʻahu in the Moku of ʻEwa. His dissertation and his book, Return to Kahiki, focused on Native Hawaiian historical connections to other Pacific Island peoples.
