ORE Seminar: Hilo Bay Improvement Project: Preliminary Designs
December 7, 3:30pm - 4:30pmMānoa Campus, Watanabe Hall and Zoom, see description for ID and password
Students in the ORE 783 Capstone class have been working on the Hilo Bay Improvement Project. The purpose of the project is twofold: (1) to investigate the feasibility of adding an engineered breach or a wave energy converter into the Hilo breakwater to improve water quality issues in Hilo Bay and (2) to investigate a breakwater head redesign to dissipate wave energy coming into Hilo Harbor and reduce coastal erosion in the surrounding area. This presentation is a continuation of what was discussed during the November 30 seminar. Preliminary designs and construction methods for the breakwater head retrofit, breach, and overtopping wave energy converter will be discussed. Project cost estimates will be discussed, and the team’s final recommendations will be presented.
