Carrying Culture 2022: Kaloalehla - Deepening Our Oceans

November 26, 7:00pm - 8:30pm
Doris Duke Theatre

Carrying Culture 2022 is a three-part series of events highlighting poets and poetry as carriers of culture, and this year we expand our focus throughout Oceania. Each program is dedicated to uplifting and celebrating the life experience, wisdom, and leadership of our community through storytelling, spoken word, and community conversation. See a recording of part one of the series here.

In our final part of the 2022 series, three phenomenal Micronesian youth share their stories of life in Hawaiʻi. These seedling storytellers will convey the ways they are learning to navigate these oceans in their home away from home. Through their stories, audiences will learn what it means to be Micronesian and how we can all support the youth in their endeavors to transform the world around them, leaving a better world than we have known for generations to come. Moderated by Carol Ann Carl. Panelists to be announced.

Carol Ann Carl (Moderator) is a daughter of the island of Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Hawaiʻi at ԴDz in the field of biochemistry. Storytelling and writing are personal forms of pedagogical healing. Her collective work, KEWERIWER, explores the social context of her life and her life as a transformer of that social context. Professionally and creatively, Carol Ann leans into the intersectionality of her identity—indigeneity, science, health, and civic advocacy—to develop narratives of empowerment for the Micronesian community in Hawaiʻi and the wider Pacific Islander community abroad. Currently, Carol Ann works as a Research Associate with the Māpuna Lab at 鶹ýԴDz.
