By Rainer Werner Fassbinder
Directed by MFA Candidate Andrew Klaus-Vineyard
One of the prolific and undeniably influential R.W. Fassbinder’s masterpieces, The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant is a scalding feat of hermetic obsession, here transposed to the early 1980s New York City from Early 1970s West Germany. Class, gender, sexual power dynamics, manipulation, abuse, and debasement collide in the tale of Petra Von Kant, a fashion designer and her latest obsession Karin, a young ingénue with ulterior motives. A true chamber piece, Petra holds court in her stylish apartment while her long-suffering assistant Marlene silently takes care of the increasingly volatile Petra and her parade of guests. Scathingly emotional and darkly funny Fassbinder evokes the melodramas of Douglas Sirk through a Queer lens and a subversive sense of formalism where style becomes substance and fake can be just as real.
