China and Changing Geopolitics in Oceania
November 18, 1:00pm - 2:00pm
Mānoa Campus, Virtual - Zoom
Most Pacific Island governments welcome China’s growing interest in Oceania. Western countries, however, are concerned that China threatens their dominance in the region, triggering
a geopolitical competition reminiscent of the Cold War era. This panel discusses the varied and complex nature of China’s engagements with Oceania, Taiwan’s reframing of its relationship
with the region, Western countries’ responses and Pacific Islands’ management of these competing interests. Hawaiʻi is important to these discussions.
