Kaua'i Community College faculty, staff, and students will share stories (mo'olelo) of Kawelo, ali'i of Kaua'i through ka'ao, Hawai'i’s traditional myth culture used as a framework to transform the student experience and the culture of academia and present songs-mele of Kaua'i and Ni'ihau. Mo'olelo O Kawelo 'Ekahi (Part I): Destined to “rule as a king” as predicted by his na kupuna, Kawelo begins his adventures on Kaua‘i becoming skilled in kite-lupe flying and moves to O‘ahu with his na kupuna where he experiences more quests. The stories will be told through the ka'ao framework of Hua (catalyst) and Ha‘alele (preparation and separation). Together, we will create a lupe. Materials required: material (pelon, sheet or garbage bag), cutting tool (scissors, snippers or bamboo handsaw), 2 rods (bamboo, plastic, or any light flexible material) the length and width of the size of the lupe, string (yarn or light weight twine), and upholstery thread and needle.
