Abstract:

Current excitement about artificial intelligence is largely due to the surprising effectiveness of deep learning with artificial neural networks. These models are particularly well-suited for high-dimensional data including video, time-series, and graphs. I will discuss the ways in which my group is applying deep learning to the physical sciences, including oceanography, atmospheric sciences, and climate models.

Bio:

Peter Sadowski is an Assistant Professor of Information and Computer Sciences at the University of Hawaii Manoa. He completed his Ph.D. and Postdoc at University of California Irvine, and his undergraduate studies at Caltech. His research focuses on deep learning and its applications to the natural sciences, particularly those at the intersection of machine learning and physics. Webpage: www2.hawaii.edu/~psadow
