Educational Reform in the German Enlightenment
January 31, 2:30pm - 4:30pmMānoa Campus, Sakamaki Hall #C-308
The Philosophy Department Colloquium Series presents "Johann Bernhard Basedow and the Philanthropin: Educational Reform in the German Enlightenment," by Dr. Robert B. Louden.
In 1774 Johann Bernhard Basedow opened a new experimental school in Dessau, Germany, an institution that Kant soon praised as “the greatest phenomenon which has appeared in this century for the improvement of the perfection of humanity.” But who was Basedow, and what was so special about his Philanthropin (“friends of humanity”)?
In this presentation, I will argue that Basedow is the unacknowledged father of the progressive education movement, and I will try to explain how and why someone whose name few people even recognize at present was able to lead Kant and scores of other liberal Enlightenment intellectuals to support his educational reform efforts with such enthusiasm.
