A professor of English, Cynthia Franklin’s approaches to literature foster students’ ability to think for themselves.
She designs her courses with a focus on contemporary issues, asking that students analyze structures, practices and approaches to knowledge.
Franklin builds a classroom community in ways that de-center the teacher’s authority. She encourages students to try out and develop ideas through meeting with them one-on-one.
The Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Teaching is awarded by the as tribute to faculty members who exhibit an extraordinary level of subject mastery and scholarship, teaching effectiveness and creativity and personal values that benefit students.
